The Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer has released the Council of Financial Regulators (the Council) advice on competition in the clearing and settlement of the Australian cash equity market.
The Council's advice is built on the work carried out by the Reserve Bank of Australia, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, and the Australian Treasury in collaboration with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, and follows consultations on the Council discussion paper Competition in the Clearing and Settlement of the Australian Cash Equity Market, which was released on 15 June 2012.
Sixteen submissions to the discussion paper were received from a range of stakeholders, including clearing and settlement infrastructure providers, service providers, industry associations and users of clearing and settlement services.
The Council advice draws out key matters for consideration in understanding the implications of competition and assessing licence applications from competing providers of central counterparty services and provides recommendations to Government on how to approach competition in clearing and settlement of the Australian cash equity market.
The Treasury is committed to upholding the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0. Work is underway across the Australian Government to achieve compliance in line with the Web Accessibility National Transition Strategy.
