Treasury is divided into 6 groups:

Secretary

Dr Steven Kennedy was appointed Secretary to the Treasury with effect from 2 September 2019.

Fiscal Group

Fiscal Group aims to achieve sound and effective fiscal outcomes.

It focuses on both short term and emerging priorities, as well as deep, systemic and structural policy issues.

The group delivers core government functions, such as producing the Budget and Intergenerational Report. Making timely and accurate payments to the states and territories.

It also develops and delivers high‑quality advice on government spending arrangements, policies and regulations that reflect a whole‑of‑economy perspective. It promotes the interests of Australians and focuses on the shape of the Australian Government in the economy and society more broadly.

International and Foreign Investment Group

International, Foreign Investment, Corporate and Law Group delivers strategic advice and high quality services including information technology, communications, parliamentary services, finance, people management and risk management to the department, portfolio ministers and agencies.

It is also responsible for foreign investment policy, investment proposals, compliance, and supporting the Foreign Investment Review Board.

Macroeconomic Group

Macroeconomic Group monitors and assesses economic conditions and prospects, both in Australia and overseas.

It provides advice on the formulation and implementation of effective macroeconomic policy, including monetary and fiscal policy, and labour market issues.

Markets Group

Markets Group provides advice on policy processes and reforms that promote a secure financial system and sound corporate practices, remove impediments to competition in product and services markets and appropriately protect consumers.

Revenue Group

Revenue Group provides advice and assists in the formulation and implementation of government taxation and retirement income policies and legislation.

It also provides information on material changes to taxation revenue forecasts and projections.

Small Business, Housing, Corporate and Law Group

Small Business, Housing, Corporate and Law Group provides policy, legal, legislation and governance advice and allows the delivery of government and departmental priorities.

The group delivers corporate, legal and legislative advice and services to the department, portfolio ministers and agencies.

It provides policy advice and delivers programs and regulatory functions to support the growth and resilience of small business.

It also advises and analyses housing-related issues to support the delivery of the Australian Government’s housing agenda.

Offices

In addition to Treasury’s Canberra office, Treasury has offices in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

These offices allow Treasury to better understand the economy across all sectors and regions. It also helps form stronger relationships with the private sector and strengthen our organisational capability.

Overseas posts

Treasury has officers deployed in key global markets who provide reporting that is an essential input into our advice to the government.

Officers are posted in Beijing, Jakarta, London, New Delhi, Paris, Tokyo, Washington and we maintain an overseas operation in Jakarta.
