On 10 January 2024, the Prime Minister, the Treasurer, the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, and the Assistant Minister for Competition, Charities and Treasury announced the appointment of the Hon Dr Craig Emerson to lead the 2023–24 Review of the Food and Grocery Code of Conduct.

The purpose of the Food and Grocery Code (the Code) is to address harmful practices in the grocery industry stemming from an imbalance of bargaining power between supermarkets and their suppliers.

The Interim Report provides 11 recommendations for improving the Code, drawing on submissions received to the consultation paper, and consultation undertaken to date. Some of the recommendations are firm and will not change, whereas others are subject to further consultation.

Submissions to the Interim Report will assist Dr Emerson in preparing a Final Report, which will be provided to the Government by 30 June 2024.
