This bar chart shows the numbers of small businesses in financial years 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 by employment sizes (0 employees, 1-4 employees and 5-19 employees) based on ABS Cat. No. 8165.0.

In 2009-10 there were:

  • 1 303 040 non-employing businesses
  • 580 177 businesses with 1–4 employees
  • 189 023 businesses with 5–19 employees.

In 2010-11 there were:

  • 1 306 023 non-employing businesses
  • 581 741 businesses with 1–4 employees
  • 191 812 businesses with 5–19 employees.

In 2011-12 there were:

  • 1 264 298 non-employing businesses
  • 582 719 businesses with 1–4 employees
  • 198 340 businesses with 5–19 employees.

In 2012-13 there were:

  • 1 306 093 non-employing businesses
  • 563 412 businesses with 1–4 employees
  • 198 340 businesses with 5–19 employees.

Numbers of micro entities by turnover

Inflation-adjusted small business indicator rate

The line graph shows that since March 2012, where real lending rates for small businesses had been trending upwards over the previous 10 year, rates have fallen in line with the official cash rate.

The real small business variable lending rate (residential-secured, term) decreased from 6.86 per cent in the March quarter 2012 to 3.96 per cent in the June quarter 2014.

The real small business variable lending rate (other, term) decreased from 7.65 per cent in the March quarter 2012 to 4.79 per cent in the June quarter 2014.
